Sr. Embedded Systems Engineer

This is a full-time position.

Our Goal:

Together, our team is taking an entirely new approach to solar tracking, including work on innovative actuators made from mass-manufactured polymers that use pneumatic systems as a replacement to traditional mechanical drives, and rugged integrated controls to drive, test, and collect data for solar installations.

What we need:

You will create and maintain production-ready software and firmware for rugged control systems deployed on solar plants. As we scale, you will have opportunities to evolve controls for our unique hardware platform for best-in-class reliability, adaptability, and performance. You must have knowledge of and experience with developing a broad code base that is modular, well documented, and maintainable. Knowledge of multiple programming languages and target environments is a requirement.

An ideal candidate will have a balance of creativity, interpersonal skills, dependability, a rigorous engineering background, with the ability and desire to build high performance machines that last for decades in remote, harsh environments.

Education and Experience

  • BS or higher in Electrical Eng, Comp Sci, or equivalent.

  • 5 years of experience

  • Demonstrated experience shipping product from beta to production to scale

  • Excellence in C and/or C++

  • Understanding of control state-machine design

  • Understanding of networking infrastructure and protocols

  • Understanding of circuit design and debugging

  • Proficient in production test and automation

Solar Designer

Position location:

  • Potsdam, NY (1st preference)

  • San Francisco, CA (2nd preference)

  • Open to consulting and remote engagements for the right candidates

Sunfolding is seeking a designer for developing solar power plant layouts and performing energy predictions, among other computer based tasks.

Structure may be contract (1099) or direct employment, to be determined. Computer system and necessary software to be provided.

Description:

Support sales and customer support engineering by:

  • Creating and maintaining product configuration library for layout purposes

  • Development of civil engineering drawings of solar power plants in AutoCAD or AutoCAD clones, Civil 3D, and related tools.

  • Simulation of solar energy production

  • Preparation of drawings and summary documentation

Future work may include:

  • More detailed site design drawings (civil, structural, and electrical), depending on customer need and development of an internal process.

  • Development and maintenance of 3D drawings in SolidWorks

  • Scripting of repetitive design tasks

  • Document Control and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) support

Position reports to Director of Product Management.

Education and Experience

  • Experience and demonstrated proficiency with Computer Aided Design tools, particularly AutoCAD. SolidWorks a plus.

  • Extra credit for experience with GIS/computer mapping tools

  • Extra credit for surveying experience

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, like Word and Excel


Director of Quality and Reliability

Description

As the director of the Quality and Reliability Team, you and your team will be responsible for quantifying and communicating the quality and reliability of all product components.

Working closely with the Product Management and Product Development teams, your team will define verification, validation, and develop reliability test and inspection methodologies, and perform tests.

In addition, you will collaborate with suppliers to determine appropriate quality standards, quality processes and documentation to ensure manufacturing quality.

When necessary, your team will perform failure analysis and work with relevant teams and suppliers to implement corrective actions.

This position will report to the Chief Product Officer.

Ideal candidate will demonstrate some or all of the following: 

  • Creativity in problem solving

  • Comfort and interest in managing and providing direction for team members

  • Written and oral communication skills to convey information to technical and non-technical colleagues and external audiences

  • Knowledge of quality assurance and control processes

  • Familiar with DOE, FMEA, and SPC

  • Knowledge of statistical data analysis

  • Understanding of accelerated lifetime testing and failure analysis

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to determine product testing requirements

  • Manage verification, validation, and quality inspection of all product components to product requirements

  • Lead failure analysis and determine corrective actions

  • Develop and improve quality plan and process documentation

  • Prioritize lab space and plan of budget required for test equipment and external resources

  • Communicate and coordinate with other Sunfolding teams to prioritize qualification tests

  • Work with external test labs and resources required for verification and validation of product

  • Establishing group practices for test data and test procedure documentation, formatting, and archiving

  • Establishing group practices for safety

Experience & Education                 

  • 10 years of experience in product reliability, product quality and failure analysis

  • Bachelors in engineering or science field

Reliability Engineer

Description

As a Reliability Engineer, you will be responsible for quantifying and communicating the reliability of all product components.

You will collaborate with your team and the Product Development team to define test standards, develop test methodologies, and execute and perform tests.

This position will report to the Quality and Reliability Lead.

Ideal candidate will demonstrate some or all of the following:

  • Creativity in problem solving

  • Understanding of accelerated lifetime testing and failure analysis

  • Written and oral communication skills to convey information to technical and non-technical colleagues and external audiences

  • Knowledge of statistical data analysis

  • Knowledge of mechanics of materials

  • Understanding of polymer properties, test methods and characterization

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Develop test methods, design test fixtures, and determine acceptance criteria for component qualification tests

  • Design and create hardware and software to automate appropriate tests

  • Analyze data and write test reports and/or whitepapers communicating results

  • Perform failure analysis and determine corrective actions

  • Design and perform experiments to support engineering optimize new designs

  • Work with external test labs and resources required for verification and validation of product

Education & Experience                      

  • 2+ years of experience in reliability engineering

  • Bachelors in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, or related field
